Chapter 23

Sophia

Kali Cuon's arms and legs kicked madly as she struggled and looked down from where she was pinned to the ceiling of her classroom in the Doolittle Sciences Building of the Zootopia University Main Campus. She'd caught her breath and had stopped crying out for help, thinking that she must be dreaming. But this was so vivid. She could even smell her former lover as she walked below her, smoothing her grey suit jacket and skirt as she took a seat at one of the student desks. There was a look of venomous satisfaction on the coyote's muzzle as she leaned back languidly in the school issue chair, crossing her legs smoothly as she did so, flipping her bushy tail over her knees. She spoke at last.

"Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?" the coyote said smoothly, her voice flowing over the words she quoted.

Kali threw back her head, smacking it hard on the ceiling, even as she tried to laugh. "Now I know I'm dreaming! You're quoting the "Moustrix" to me?" she protested even as she rubbed the back of her head. For a dream, that seemed to have stung quite a bit.

The coyote gestured slightly with the fingers of one paw, bouncing the levitating dhole solidly against the ceiling once again. A sharp rap to the back of her skull once again…and Cuon now had the sinking realization that this was very, very real. "Ohhhhhh…..shiiiiit," she whispered.

"Shit indeed, lover," the lean female said looking up to the ceiling. "We have some time to talk before your next class, and I have a group session with my clients this afternoon, so we need to move this right along. Bend your knees, or the landing will be…messy"

"Bend?" And suddenly she was falling. Kali flexed as she had been warned but still landed on her bare feet in a kneeling crouch before the coyote. She was standing now, looking down on Cuon. Kali felt abruptly very small and weak before this very confident mammal before her. Was this really Cheryl?
What happened to the insecurity and doubt she had worn like a cloak before?

"Not bad. You were always very flexible, as I remember. Sorry for the theatrics, but I don’t have time to screw around with you. Let's cut to the chase, shall we honey? First item, magic is real. Your understanding of physics…is incomplete to say the least," this part the lean female said with obvious pleasure as she smashed most of Kali's preconceptions about the universe into dust.

"Second, there are people out there that use magic. And not for pleasant reasons. One of them may be gunning for you. He's already hurt some very dear friends of mine, and may do the same to you."

Kali was stunned for a moment. After all that she had done, Cher still cared? Cuon tilted her head in confusion, trying to understand what was going on.

"Oh, don’t give me that look," She snapped quickly. "I don't wish to have blood on my hands by either action or inaction. I'm giving you and…what was his name? Asher? Yes, Asher. I'm giving you an out for the duration. Two tickets to Black Butte," Silverheels said as she pulled the paperwork out of her jacket inner pocket.

"On the reservation you will be safe. However, I do not recommend that you talk to either of the wolves that make their home there. My parents. My mother in particular has a mind to make a rug out of your ass. I'm not going to try to talk her out of it," Cheryl said with a smile. Her mother could be quite the terror when she chose. And daddy, he wasn't a slouch in a fight either. He'd put a drunken and violent pronghorn antelope in a headlock and held him there for over an hour before the police came that far out to investigate the trouble on the reservation. Either way, Kali better watch her furry ass at Black Butte.

She offered the tickets to Cuon, who took them with a shaking paw. "Why?

"Like I said, I don't want blood on my hands. And right now. I need something from you".

Feeling like she had something to control this stranger in Cher's skin with, she tried to bargain. To gain some type of advantage. "What's in it for me?"

WHUMP!

She was pinned back hard on the ceiling, the impact jarring her teeth.

"This is not a negotiation. I need to know as much as you can tell me about what you called multiverse theory. Now," the coyote bluntly ordered as she walked around the classroom, finding a more appropriate place to make wishes known from.

"Multiverse theory?" she squeaked through gritted teeth at the irritated canine now seated once more below her.

The confident coyote nodded. Smiled once more and warned, "Flex your knees"

Once Kali Cuon had picked herself off the floor, she dusted herself off and took a seat in one of the student desks. So…commanding. If Cher had been like this…she'd have never have looked at Asher. And with no small regret at what she now knew that she had lost, Kali Cuon described multiverse theory as best she could to the powerful female coyote sitting in the professor's chair before her.

Well, that was useless, Cheryl Silverheels thought as she rode the cross-town bus to her small office in the Counseling Services Department for Zootopia Mammal Health and Welfare. It was going to be one of their last sessions she thought as she considered everything that Kali had spoken of.

Mostly it was about the creation of universes themselves and how each may be a bubble of its own space-time generated by the creation of a quantum singularity. In a nutshell, the creation of a black hole gave rise to its own island universe, like a bud on a tree during spring. All well and good if you were going to be a god and create your own universe. But what she needed to know was all the possible quantum universes that could arise from choice or action in these same bubbles.

For that, Kali had no coherent answer that she could use. It was a place where her science had bumped up the edge of what was known as testable, and what had to be taken on faith, or experienced. In the end, it seemed there was still quite a bit that they both needed to learn. And in thinking that, Cheryl was back to the conundrum she had faced before. If coyote is to be Her priest and teacher of Her ways, then who would teach them to her?

NANA!

But Esme was gone, she thought bitterly as the bus reached the station. She'd barely heard the marmot driver announce the stop, so lost in her thoughts Cher was. But she did notice something new. The gaze of prey species. Watching her very carefully as she stood and walked to the rear door to exit the vehicle. There seemed to be a soft murmur of relief as she left the door close behind her. Well, that was odd. It had seemed that things were slowly getting better in pred-prey relations following the Bellwether incident. Especially now that so many people knew that it was her Nick and new friend Judy who had taken down the psychopathic ewe. And really, who would have thought such malevolence would exist under such a sweet exterior?

But as Cheryl Silverheels was rapidly learning, surface often had nothing at all to do with substance.

She heard a door lock click as she stood waiting for a light to change so she could cross the street to the office building. A flickered glance to her left and she saw the ground squirrel in the greenish mini-van staring directly ahead. Way too stiffly staring. Hunh? She'd experienced the casual prejudice of prey animals before, it almost an unconscious reaction to her presence. But this…this was different.

The light changed, and as she walked forward in the crosswalk, she caught the small rodent's eye with a change in posture. She saw the shift in his body language…trying to look smaller. And she winked at him, exaggerating the motion. Making sure he knew that she knew. The look of mortification on his face bordered on horror as she finished walking briskly across the street to the entrance of the building.

Well, that was unusual, Cher thought as she entered the medium sized revolving door to the office building. It was late in the day, and not too many mammals were around. There should just be the patients, not that she even really call them that, as she was not a medical doctor. A PhD, yes, but acting in the role of a counselor.

And as she walked briskly to the elevators at the back of the entry lobby, she had the distinct feeling that something substantial HAD happened. Something that was now affecting the social relationship between species that normally fell on one side of the predator-prey class divide.

Great. One more damn thing to worry about. And she would have to figure out a why behind it all too, she thought as she rode the elevator up to the seventh floor and the group room. But she knew what she could do about finding out about what Esme would have done.

As the elevator car came to a stop with a soft vertical bounce and "ding", the coyote stepped out from between the doors, striding purposefully down the hall. She knew exactly what she would do next.

She couldn't ask Nana anymore. But she knew the next best thing.

Cheryl Silverheels knew who had the old chamois' grimorie!

Finally, I had the time to read this chapter. So I'm up-to-date for a while. The Matrix quote was a very nice choice. It fits the situation, as it reminded me of Neo's wtf-like facial expression when he heard about how the real world works. Oh my, that was hilariously good! A bit short, this one was. But nevertheless a very good and likable chapter. After reading this, I really want to finish some of my stuff. Time will be on my side again when sun, warmth and light will be more around within the evening hours.

Lol - while reading the matrix quote I thought to myself "I know that from somewhere, sounds kinda like the Matrix". I've never watched Matrix in English though, but it still was not that hard to spot. Nice~!

And about Kali - my ex was and did pretty much the same. And to be honest, if I were Cher, I wouldn't have cared for Kali's fate whatsoever. Like 'that bitch shall burn'..

There is no pain greater than the betrayal of someone you have trusted with that most rare and precious of treasures; your heart. I think that eventually, everyone goes through it in some way. Was there any bouncing off ceilings in your case? She deserved it and more from the way things sound. But remember....things get better with time. I went thru similar, and yeah, it hurt for the longest time. But eventually, I found someone better. I hope you find someone better when the time is right for you.

No bouncing off ceilings unfortunately. I really would have wished for something like that. I'm all on my own for almost eight years now, so I'm past believing in the "It'll all get better" phrases - unfortunately.

If anyone deserves someone special in their life, it's you. You've given so much to the community and you really are adored, HT. In time I hope, you find a pleasant surprise in your life once again. That is, if you still want that.

Who doesn't want a pleasant surprise?
Unfortunately not everyone gets that though.

I like that little Matrix reference... What was the title of the first chapter again? Messages from Morpheus... ;)

Can't wait for more... :la:

Gotta admit, I did really like writing the part where Kali was bouncing off the ceiling. I never knew that Cher could have such a mean streak. But she did have plenty of motivation for that, neh? So ...as soon as I can...we'll see what else Miss Silverheels has up her sleeve.

I liked to hear this old quote again:"coyote should be my priest"

Just read it a few times yesterday... When I did some research work...

Soon... ;)
